Why Expand Emergency and Trauma Services at Marian?

When a serious accident occurs or life-threatening illness strikes, time is of the essence.

  • Community members seek emergency care at Marian Regional Medical Center because they are in crisis. Our Emergency Department’s expert health care professionals stand ready 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to provide immediate care to save lives, prolong lives, and improve the quality of life for all in need.

The Reason:

  • Marian’s Emergency Department sees the highest number of trauma cases throughout Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo Counties. As a Level III Trauma Center, Marian has become a Receiving Center, providing patients with access to medical experts specializing in emergency resuscitation, surgery, and intensive care.
  • Since opening the new hospital in 2012, Marian’s 32-bed Emergency Department has experienced record patient volume growth. In 2017, Marian’s Emergency Department saw 77,622 patients – an increase of 37% since 2012. Due to this record growth, more space is necessary to continue meeting the community’s growing emergency and trauma care needs, adding 50% more square footage to care for the emergency needs of our rapidly expanding community. The Emergency Services Expansion Project will provide ten additional private exam rooms, a second nursing station, and a specialized pediatric track.

The Solution:

  • The survival of emergency patients depends on the quality and proximity to lifesaving emergency and trauma care. To provide our community with the facilities, technology, and medical experts of the future, the Marian Foundation initiated an ambitious goal to raise $2.5 million for the Emergency Services Expansion Project from community donations and recently surpassed this goal. Thanks to the community’s generosity, Marian will be able to continue to meet the 24/7 needs of the community at a high-quality level.
